Hot Topic: Avian Flu & Flock Biosecurity

Natural Hygiene Solutions for Your Flock

2022 has become the worst year for avian influenza in the UK, with over 200 cases reported.

It is now a legal requirement for poultry keepers in Britain to follow strict biosecurity and housing measures to keep their birds safe and healthy.

What is Avian Flu / Avian Influenza?

  • Avian influenza (AI), also referred to as Avian Flu and Bird Flu is a highly contagious viral disease that affects both domestic and wild birds.
  • In birds, AI viruses are shed in the faeces and respiratory secretions. They can all be spread through direct contact with infected birds, as well as via faeces or contaminated feed and water.

  • Because of the resistant nature of AI viruses, including their ability to survive for long periods when temperatures are low, they can also be carried on farm equipment and spread easily from farm to farm.

  • It only takes 1 tablespoon of contaminated droppings to wipe out an entire flock.

  • Infected birds will die within 3-4 days of contact.

NFU Poultry Board Chair James Mottershead said:

“As poultry producers, the health and welfare of our birds is our number one priority, and these housing measures alongside the existing biosecurity requirements will help minimise the impact of avian influenza on the poultry sector. These measures apply to all poultry keepers whether you have one hen in the garden or a large poultry business.”

Bird Keepers are Being Asked to:

  • House birds or net all outside areas for poultry.
  • Cleanse and disinfect equipment after contact with poultry.

  • Thoroughly disinfect housing on a continuous basis.

  • Minimise direct and indirect contact between poultry and wild birds, making sure all feed and water is not accessible to wild birds.
