Orego-Stim Maintains Gut Health, Supporting Optimal Egg Quality
CUSTOMER SUMMARY
- A large layer farm located in the state of Espírito Santo in Brazil.
They have 2,200,000 Hy-Line hens housed across four sheds.
The producer had an issue with high numbers of dirty eggs as a result of poor excreta quality and an unspecifiedenteritis.
Having tried a combination of organic acids, probiotics, and essential oils, the issues continued, so they begantrialling Orego-Stim Liquid with no other additives.
PRODUCT BACKGROUND
- Orego-Stim (OS) is a high quality eubiotic composed of 100% natural oregano essential oil.
Available as both a powder and a liquid for flexibility in application.
Developed to support intestinal health in poultry and maintain optimum gut integrity.
APPLICATION AND PARAMETERS ASSESSED
- Initially, two of the four sheds (Shed 1 and Shed 4) were supplemented with Orego-Stim via the drinking water at 500ml/1000L of water for two weeks.
During the second week, there was a heat stress challenge.
After two weeks of treatment, Orego-Stim powder was supplemented to all hens.
The number of dirty eggs (%) were measured weekly in all sheds.
RESULTS
- During the period of heat stress challenge in the second week, the percentage of dirty eggs from hens in the control sheds (Shed 2 and 3) substantially increased. However, the hens from the two sheds where water was supplemented with OSL were better able to cope with the challenge and the increase in dirty eggs was not as drastic.
Having noticed the efficacy of the product, the customer introduced OSP across all sheds from week 3 onwards.
Benefits were seen week on week with OSP supplementation and by the end of week 8, the percentage of dirty eggs was closer to the 5% target, excreta quality was improved and costs to the farm in terms of excreta removal from sheds was reduced.
Supplementing diets with Orego-Stim maintains a healthy and diverse gut microbiota, supporting optimal feed utilisation and hen performance.
In conclusion, OSL may support the production of larger eggs, and a higher percentage of 1st class eggs in free range production systems, leading to increased profitability from the sale of these higher value eggs.
